Summary of “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway”

The movie is an adaptation of Sagarika Chakraborty’s memoirs, “The Journey of a Mother,” which tells the true experience of an Indian couple whose children were removed from them by the Norwegian Childcare System (Barnevernet) in 2011.

Any mother would be unbalanced by the shock of having her children taken away, but Debika is frequently seen writhing, screaming, or otherwise acting in a way that suggests mental instability to an uncaring European culture. If hand-feeding her kids, letting them sleep with her and her husband, or dotting her son’s forehead with a black dot to ward off ill luck suggest terrible parenting, Debika’s relentless stifling proves it. Chibber deprives Debika of the empathy we would have had for her by forcing Mukerji to perform loudly as if she were in a vast amphitheatre.

With the exception of a brief passage describing domestic abuse, Debika’s marriage is seldom mentioned, and there is no justification for her total solitude. The husband is less concerned about the suffering of his wife and children than he is about his forthcoming citizenship application.

Although prejudice is there, it is important to note that a compelling side story involving a social service scam involving immigrant children goes mostly unnoticed.

Tussle between Norwegian embassy Vs Movie

Norwegian embassy said that the movie ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway” was a “work of fiction” and incorrectly depicted the Nordic country’s belief in family life.

“It incorrectly depicts Norway’s belief in family life and our respect for different cultures. Child welfare is a matter of great responsibility, never motivated by payments or profit,” Norwegian Ambassador Hans Frydenlund said on Twitter.

He added that Profit is not what drives child welfare. The assertion that “the more children placed in the foster system, the more money they make” is untrue in all respects.

According to the statement, regardless of cultural background, eating with your hands or letting your kids sleep in your bed are normal activities in Norway and are not seen as hazardous to kids.
