The Beijing People’s Art Theatre, established in 1949 and located in Beijing, China, is the oldest theatre in Asia. The oldest theatre in Asia that is still in use today, despite not being as old as some theatres in other areas of the world, is this one.
The Beijing People’s Art Theatre is recognised for its presentations of contemporary Chinese and foreign playwrights as well as traditional Chinese plays. Over the years, the theatre has hosted a number of well-known actors and directors and contributed significantly to the growth of Chinese theatre and the performing arts.
The Kabuki-za Theatre in Tokyo, Japan, which opened in 1889, and the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore, which opened in 2002 but is intended to evoke Southeast Asia’s traditional architecture, are just a few examples of the many other renowned and highly regarded historic theatres and performing arts venues throughout Asia.
