India’s first woman to obtain a degree in Western medicine, Dr Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMCP) — one of the world’s first medical schools for women.
The shot was taken on October 10, 1885. The first licenced female doctor of western medicine in Syria is seated to the right of Dr Anandibai Joshi in the picture. Kei Okami, the first woman in Japan to earn a medical degree, is pictured in the centre.
All three graduated from the same institute, the WMCP, which was absorbed by and became Drexel’s College of Medicine, Pennsylvania over the century.
Elizabeth Blackwell, who was interestingly the first female physician in the United States, formed the WCMP. An unusual development in the 19th century, WCMP attracted women from various countries and socioeconomic backgrounds.
