The Bhakra-Nangal railway train is India’s sole train that has provided free journeys to its passengers for 73 years. Between Nangal and Bhakar, travellers frequently take a special train that runs between the Punjab and Himachal Pradesh borders. The Bhakra Railway is expected to transport roughly 300 passengers from 25 villages, with the primary beneficiaries being kids going school.
HISTORY Bhakra-Nangal railway
In 1948, the Bhakra-Nangal railway line was established. During the construction of the Bhakra Nangal Dam, there was no way to get between Nangal and Bhakar, therefore a special railway was built. As a result, according to Indian rail data, it was determined to build a railway track along the route to facilitate the transit of both heavy gear and people.
The Indian Railway all over the country has since proposed five variants of modern engines, but this special train still operates with its 60-year-old engines.
SPECIALITY of Bhakra-Nangal railway
The train leaves Nangal Railway Station at 7.05 a.m. every day and arrives in Bhakar at 8.20 a.m. It leaves Nangal at 3.05 p.m. for another journey, arriving at Bhakar Railway at 4.20 p.m.
The historic train Bhakar-Nangal travels 13 kilometres across the Shiwalik Hills. It arrives at Nehla station and then travels to the Nangal Dam in Punjab. Despite the fact that the train uses 18 to 20 litres of diesel per hour, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to keep it free. The train is now a symbol of the wealth disparity that existed during the British era. Helpers, pump operators, carpenters, and other dam workers make up the majority of the passengers.
