Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was a legendary santoor player and great Indian composer from Jammu and Kashmir. He was born in Jammu in 1938 and is believed to be the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor from Jammu and Kashmir. The santoor is originally a folk instrument but Pandit ShivKumar Sharma gave the santoor international recognition through his playing style and composition.
Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was born in Jammu to an Indian singer Uma Dutt Sharma. He started getting lessons in Vocal and tabla from his father. He started learning santoor at the age of 13.
He gave his first public performance in Mumbai in 1955. He gave his first composition in Bollywood in Shantaram film in 1956. He recorded his first solo album in 1960. He composed music with flute legend Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia for an array of films such as Silsila, Lamhe, and Chandni among others.
He is the recipient of many awards including Padma Vibhusan.
PANDIT SHIV KUMAR SHARMA Dies at the age of 84 in Mumbai on 10th May 2022. He had been suffering from kidney-related issues for the last six months and was on dialysis. He passed away due to cardiac arrest.
He was instrumental in taking Santoor and Indian classical music to the global stage. Pt Sharma was a great artist, guru, researcher, thinker, and above all a kind-hearted human being. Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma mentored many disciples and enriched the world of music with his multifarious contributions.
