NATIONAL DOCTORS DAY- Doctors are a noble gift for every living being on this Earth. They are obliged with moral responsibilities to treat every human being with great tenderness and benevolence. Being a doctor is not an easy task. It appeals for great discipline, moral values, patience, intense hard work, and always on duty for social service.

Every year, the Indian Medical Association(IMA) commemorates 1st July as NATIONAL DOCTORS DAY on the Birth anniversary of former West Bengal Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He made an enormous contribution to the medical field. He played a significant role in establishing medical institutions like Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, and the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. He was awarded Bharat Ratan in 1991. He was also called the first medical consultant in the subcontinent of India who towered over his contemporaries in several fields by British Medical journal.

FROM HELLO TO THE LAST GOODBYE

Doctors play a vital role in every people’s life. The time humans take birth, we are not only welcome by our parents but also by doctors. From the start of our life, we need treatments, supplements, and medication for the proper functioning of the body. That can only be possible with doctors’ advice. Doctors stand with us throughout our life, so that we can stroll happily in our life.

LIFE SAVIOURS IN COVID-19

Corona made hefty destruction and impacted every people’s life very atrociously all over the world. The highly infectious disease causes acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2). The whole medical army functions as the first line of defense to save people from the Wuhan(China)lab biological weapon named Corona. Doctors, nurses, medical cleaners, ambulance drivers, health care administrators, medical researchers, Police administration, and all the selfless warriors are giving it all in the healthcare framework while cutting themselves off from their families, friends, and loved ones. Till their last breath, many doctors even ended up giving their live treating patients. A tribute to the warriors who selflessly made many sacrifices for delivering safety, peace, and welfare to humanity is invaluable. They are doing God’s work and deserve lifelong gratitude.

INDIA’S CONCERNS

India’s current medical condition is not enough to meet the public health demand. As of January 2020, the doctor population ratio is 1:1456, which is far away as recommended by WHO(1:1000). There is only one government doctor for every 10,000 people. The availability of nurses is more worst. It is estimated that there is a shortage of 600000 doctors and more than 2 million nurses in the country right now. More than half of the doctors don’t have a medical degree in rural areas. Nurses and ASHA workers are underpaid, especially in rural areas, and do not have any good career prospects in India. Uneven distribution of doctors and nurses in urban and rural areas. There are four times as many medicos in the urban areas when compared to the rural areas. In the case of nurses, there is three times more number of nurses in the urban areas. As we can see 70% of the Indian population lives in rural areas. We can see many Nurses from India love to work in Gulf countries or Europe because they paid well.

65% of health expenditure is out of pocket and such expenditure pushes more than 50 million people into poverty each year. Many patients in India directly go for medicine without consulting the doctor. They do this because of huge fees, related tests, and expensive medicine. Doctors never recommend generic medicine. NATIONAL DOCTORS DAY

Government hospitals in India are not well functional and systematically equipped with technology and sometimes proper treatment is not available there. Health professionals in the public sector are insufficiently compensated and motivation levels are extremely low.

Measure to address the current situation

Enhance the production of doctors(esp specialist and super-specialist) at a private hospital with certification, short courses, exchange programs, etc.

Update nursing education and quality training to match the developed nation model. Enhance the stature of a government nurse.

There will be a less medical burden on people if Doctors will recommend more generic medicine. The Medical Council of India should focus on generating more generic medicine to meet the demand of populations.

Government should invest more in research and development in the technology related to medical appliances, equipment, ventilators, etc.

Corona Pandemic showed a mirror to the medical facility of every nation. Lack of Nurse, Doctors, Beds, Ventilators, Oxygen cylinders, medical equipment, etc has put many people’s lives in danger. But still, doctors saved as many lives as they can with the limited equipment they have. In this matter of concern, every government should realize that development always comes with a better medical facility for the nation. NATIONAL DOCTORS DAY
