5 TYPES OF TIGERS FOUND IN INDIA

There are around 5 types of tigers found Across India- They are different in nature, habitat and origin.

WHITE TIGER

The white tiger is another variant of the Bengal tiger, Also reported from the wild but very rare as compared to Bengal tigers. Several white tigers are found in captivity and around one hundred are found in the Indian zoo, Delhi Zoo, Mysore zoo, and Nandankanan Zoological Park.

SNOW TIGER

India’s first snow tiger spotted in upper Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, high in the Himalayas at 3630m around the snow-clad peaks of Eastern Himalayas. It is no different then Royal Bengal Tiger with yellow – orange in color with black stripes, But got his name from the habitat.

As far back as 1912, Captain FM Bailey of the Indian Army alluded to the “occurrence of tigers in the high altitude forests of the Mishmi Hills (which falls under the Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh).” The Idu Mishmi tribe itself — the 12,000-strong sub-tribe of the ethnic Mishmis of Tibet and Arunachal Pradesh — are known to have deep respect for tigers.

In December 2012, Idu Mishmi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh spotted three tiger cubs somewhere in the Dibang Valley district.

SWAMP TIGER

Swamp tiger of Sundarbans are Royal Bengal Tiger, little smaller in size, slimmer in appearance but extremely powerful with ability to run on

mangrove of Sundarbans. The Sundarbans swamp is home to about 74 endangered Bengal tigers and provides a unique ecosystem plus one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger.  The big cats love water, these mangrove specialists are a step ahead and are excellent swimmers. Sundarban tigers swim for long distances regularly, and at times even 2-3 kms wide big river confluences. Swimming is extremely important as this vast aquatic landscape is a mosaic of islands where tigers roam in search of prey, as well as to patrol their territory.

GOLDEN TIGER

A very rare Golden Tabby tiger has been spotted in Kaziranga National Park in Assam. The tigress has been photographed by Mayuresh Hendre who works as a Naturalist and Destination Manager with luxury cruise ship MV Mahabahu. This is the only sighting of a Golden tiger in India.

BLACK TIGER

Tigers have a distinctive dark stripe pattern on a light background of white or golden. This is known as pseudo-melanism, which is different from true melanism, a condition characterised by unusually high deposition of melanin, a dark pigment. This type of tiger is seen in Nandankanan biological park, odisha.
